Camberwell Business Forum: Fortifying your digital defences

Thank you to all the local business owners and guests who attended the Camberwell Business Forum on Thursday, April 18.

We gathered upstairs at Deco, where we enjoyed drinks and networking, followed by a light dinner. We then heard from our guest speaker George Oosthuizen, founder of Vektren, who shared practical tips and strategies to avoid online threats, and how we can enhance our digital safety.

As a summary, the session covered the following:

  • Real-life cases: George discussed ransomware incidents in a Melbourne real estate company and a phishing attack on a chiropractic clinic. These examples highlighted the complexities and costs associated with cyber threats.
  • Common misconceptions: Many believe moving to the cloud or having minimal valuable data reduces security needs. However, it’s not about if but when a threat occurs, emphasising the need for proactive security measures.
  • Essential 8: George outlined the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential 8 strategies for robust cyber defence, including system patching, multi-factor authentication, regular backups, and more.
  • Preventive measures: Beyond Essential 8, George stressed the importance of continuous updates, awareness training, phishing simulations, and prudent data and access control management.

Lastly, if you require any personal assistance with making your business more cyber secure and would like to speak to George to engage his services, please visit the Vektren website.

We hope you enjoyed this event, and we look forward to seeing you at the next one!
